Geraldine Aikman
Geraldine Aikman is a fine artist and illustrator, and currently works as a graphics coordinator at a Maine newspaper. A graduate of Paier College of Art in Connecticut, Geraldine studied children’s book design, book cover illustration, trompe l’oeil painting and portraiture. She has experimented in etching, silver-smithing, jewelry making, photography, Photoshop art and Web page design. The artist enjoyed childhood in a small New England town and feels it's bucolic lifestyle influenced her art. "My mother was a fashion illustrator in London in her youth, my father was mechanically creative, and the whole family was always working on one project or another." Her mother, Pauline Aikman, is known today for her floral watercolors, which are true to nature. "I'm much more decorative in my approach," says Geraldine. "I love working with patterns and so I paint detailed art. It doesn't matter what the subject matter is." Geraldine designs and illustrates greeting cards and gift products on a freelance basis for nationally known companies. Her art is reproduced on a variety of products, including soap packaging, paper goods, figurines and tablemats. “I stay true to my own vision when designing for giftware products. Commercial art is great training for working with deadlines and staying within certain parameters. Working within a set of rules actually allows me to be freer with my art.” |
